Not even him taking a stand and confessing to Yui, knowing that she will be obliterated if he does, makes up for it. It spends a whole episode on the game he lost and him possibly being obliterated if he catches a ball in a game they are playing… That is clearly what he regrets. I know what you are thinking, it is implied that he gets into drugs after losing the game and that is probably his regret and may have even killed him. They do a good job building Hinata’s character and even make him the best friend of Otonashi and be the love interest of Yui, the best character, but his backstory just takes away from all of that. We have paralyzed from the neck down, watching all of your siblings being killed, being so close to being able to make something of yourself, but die right before you do, not being able to thank the person who saved your life, and of course not catching a baseball and losing a game… One of these things is clearly not like the others. So Angel Beats is about an afterlife where kids who die and have regrets and trauma go to be able to live the childhood they never had.
